Angela Bulloch is a Canadian-born, Berlin-based artist, whose practice is marked by the manipulation of codes and the questioning of both the desire for and exercise of control. While her works often seduce viewers with the illusion of simplicity, they are encoded with a vast array of sources, ranging from the formal strategies of the early 20th century avant-gardes through Minimalism and Conceptual Art to a broad range of philosophical literature, 20th century film production and developments in 21st century digital media. This Source Book – which combines critical essays by John Miller and Nav Haq, visual notes compiled in the process of the artist’s collaboration with composer and musician George van Dam, as well as a TV scenario written by Christine Lang and Christoph Dreher – aims to engage Bulloch’s practice in all its complexity. It is produced on the occasion of the artist’s survey exhibition at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (21 January to 9 April 2012), which was aptly entitled SHORT BIG DRAMA.

Source Book 10: Angela Bulloch is the 10th and final publication of Witte de With Publishers’ Source Book series, monographic publications providing an in-depth look into one artist’s practice.
