In An exhibition with an audio script by Sarah Demeuse and Wendy Tronrud and a soundtrack by Mario García Torres in collaboration with Sol Oosel, on view at the institution formerly known as Witte de With from January 27 to May 5, 2019, Melissa Gordon explored the phenomenon of 'dropping out'. This publication, or ephemera, appeared on the occasion of the exhibition and is a "dropped out" part of a work of art by Gordon. The publication takes its starting point as a life-size model for a painting, a process of working by Gordon’s which materializes an investigation for each of her architecturally-scaled "Female Readymade" paintings. For The Embarrassment of SUCKESS, she models objects related to the gestures of artists who have dropped out. Four parts of the model, photographed life-size, are posters, folded up, and together add up to the full essay, which addresses topics of embarrassment, the outlines of authorship, dropping out, and care.
