The retrospective exhibition Cecilia Vicuña. Seehearing the Enlightened Failure (February 8 to October 25, 2020) MUAC, Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo. UNAM, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City; (May 26 to November 24, 2019) Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam brings together more than a hundred works by poet, visual artist and activist Cecilia Vicuña. Since the 1960s, the artist has formed a radical perspective on the relationship between art and politics through her written and visual work. For decades, she has developed a diverse and multidisciplinary body of work based on words, images, environments and a combination of languages, media and techniques.
This edition, part of the Folios MUAC series, published in both print and e-publication on the occasion of this exhibition, brings together texts by curator Miguel A. López, Lucy R. Lippard, Valerie Fraser and Cecilia Vicuña. It also includes a selection of illustrations and a number of previously unpublished documents. This selection shows Vicuna's constant dedication to themes of eroticism, colonial legacies, activism, feminism, collective joy, indigenous thought, and environmental destruction.
